1970 Dodge Challenger

Ancient History, aka the backstory of my love for the 1970 Dodge Challenger

When I was an impressionable young lad I ended up with a Plymouth Duster with 6 cylinder, not understanding that the power I lusted after would come from a V8. No one explained it to me, I didn't read car mags or play racing video games.

You see, prior to needing to pick out a car my friends had dragged me out to the street races of Livermore and I got to hitch a ride in a hopped up Plymouth Duster. I was hooked and told my Dad, I want a Duster. Saved up the obligatory funds from slinging donuts at George's Bakery and went to go look at the first Duster in the classifieds.

My Dad asked when I found my first shit brown slant sixer, "Are you sure you want a six cylinder?" Later I would understand why. The slant six would only pass a gas station, although it was probably a better starter car as I planted it into a telephone pole ten days after I got my licence.

The second Plymouth Duster, a snazzy Gold Duster with a snake skin vinyl top was better with its mean three eighteen but still I wanted more. With the help of my Dad a 440 out of a motorhome was soon procured, to which my mother told me I was told I'd need to find a larger car. I was still living at home at the time and she understood what the big engine - s mall car combo would mean...

So I drafted up a list of my favorite Mopar Bs and Es. I loved the Dukes of Hazzard year 'coke bottle' body style Dodge Chargers, the '69 and '71/72 Road Runners and the E-bodies.

The first car ad we looked at was for '70 Challenger R/T for $1200, some guy was selling it for his brother. It was primered. It was glorious. It was complete minus the engine. I was fuckin' hooked. I wanted that car. I said we'd take it.

Problem being, this guy had to to talk to his brother and after a few painful days it was taken off the market, not sold at all. Turns out the dude was just trying to motivate his bro to get the heap outta there I still remember getting the call, I was working at Costco at the time and it crushed me. Dang, that car was COOL!!! Ha! Youth problems!

I ended up with a free 1968 Dodge Charger, but I always wanted that '70 Dodge Challenger....

Finally I got luck enough to find one!
