Jason's Trip to a Real Intake Foundry!
I'll let the man himself, Jason Minahan (the guy with the Mini) tell the story:
I’m working on making my own pattern for a short deck Desoto hemi intake manifold. The Buddy Bar foundry makes many manifolds for Hot Heads (they make tons of hemi stuff) and I have a contact with the owner of hot heads. He said he uses these guys. I had asked them to give me dimensions to design my pattern to their equipment over the phone, but it finally boiled down to Mike saying “You really need to just come down here and see the equipment in person so there are no misunderstandings”…So…”Damn…I’ll see you on Tuesday”. I got in my mini and drove my honkey ass down there.
Apparently they cast EVERY Edelbrock intake manifold until 1991, many mopar performance manifolds, all the Weiand manifolds and blower cases, and many of the experimental ford stuff too!
The place is huge. They got 2 main sections, hi production and low production. Pretty self explanatory.
Very informative. I got to see how all the gates and runners and risers and core prints all worked for real. Very cool.
The head is a ford experimental one. That’s what he said.
The picture with the yellow cores are what goes inside the manifold do define the runners and water passages. These cores are made from metal patterns that are baked to cure the resin in the special sand. The sand is blown in. They’re hollow too. The blue stuff you see is glue where they glue several pieces together.
